Shooting at Howe Park Wounds 4 People Shot in the Arden-Arcade Section of Sacramento County

Sacramento County deputies are working a gunfire incident that erupted Saturday evening at Howe Park in Sacramento while officers were breaking up an unsanctioned gathering of several hundred people.

Prior to the Shooting

Sacramento County law enforcement initially got calls about Howe Park around 6:30 PM on April 18 after receiving reports of individuals possibly carrying concealed weapons. Shortly after, a second call came in about a possible fight occurring near the park.

A law enforcement helicopter conducted an aerial sweep but reported no active disturbance. Despite this, it became clear that a crowd of several hundred had assembled at the park without any permit or approval.

The Dispersal and Shooting

Responding units began the process of clearing the park by positioning themselves around the crowd and broadcasting over loudspeakers telling attendees to clear out. Roughly 15 minutes were given for people to comply.

It was during this dispersal that between 20 and 25 rounds were discharged. Gunfire sent the crowd running in all directions. Law enforcement immediately began looking for those injured.

Four Victims Hospitalized

Ultimately, four shooting victims were found to have been shot. The shooting victims — made up of one woman and three men each reported to be in their early to late twenties — were brought to hospitals in the Sacramento area. Medical personnel noted that two victims sustained immediate injuries, one person had injuries of a moderate nature, and one had injuries classified as minor. Sacramento fire crews also responded and aided in treating shooting victims prior to hospital transport.

Physical Evidence

The primary shooting scene seemed to have happened adjacent to Cottage Way alongside the Home Depot store on the 2200 Howe Avenue block. CSI personnel located more spent casings throughout the Cottage Way area. Bullet holes were also found in the wrought iron fence near the Home Depot store. These discoveries suggested that a shooter had been shooting in a southerly direction from Cottage Way toward the Home Depot store. The nearby Home Depot was temporarily locked down for a period of time. CSI investigators and detectives stayed at the location for hours.

Arrests Made

Intelligence received over scanner radio traffic showed that a Kia vehicle was contacted by law enforcement in Solano County California. Four detainees were stopped and detained. Law enforcement units were traveling to Solano County to transport the detainees for investigation. Video reviewed at the scene confirmed that two individuals had fired weapons.
